Many people are
very worried about what happens when they are afflicted
by inexplicable sounds in the ears or in the head.
Good
information based on facts has a calming effect and may
banish the anxiety.
Tinnitus (ear
buzz) can best be described as a sound experience for
which no sound source can be shown. Many prefer to use
the medical term tinnitus. Tinnitus is by itself not an
illness but a symptom for which many reasons may exist.
The sound
experiences can be very different e.g. clicking,
persistent tones and various hissing sounds.
No treatment of
tinnitus effective for most people exists at present.
There are, however, different forms of treatment that in
specific cases can alleviate the experiences of the
sound. We may roughly classify these treatments as
medical, acoustic and psychological. It is not uncommon
for people with severe tinnitus to try many forms of
treatment.
The Tinnitus
Association has a self-help group called "The Tinnitus
Comrades". It is a discussion group where people with
tinnitus meet to talk, listen and support each other.
